As we enter summer and the temperatures start to increase right across Wrexham, pet owners we need to be aware of keeping pets cool. Most dog owners are aware of cooling pads and fun games with apples or ice as a way to keep dogs cool but what about rabbits.

Rabbits don’t cope well in hot weather, and because of this can suffer from heat stroke and can be fatal to your rabbits life. To prevent your rabbit from getting any illness due the the hot weather, like heat stroke, you need to be aware to take action when it comes to the hot days, to keep your rabbit as cool as possible.

Here is a few tips from our Animal Smart Wrexham pet sitters to keeping your rabbits cool this summer.

Damp towels or damp cotton pillowcases also provide cool flooring for bunnies to lay on to keep them cool. Maybe try and keep these in the freezer so they are cooler for longer and alternate them. You could place a ceramic tile inside the pillow case because they are cooler well .place them in a shaded area to have full protection from the sun.

Fill old plastic water bottle up with water and freeze. Place inside a cotton pillow case and place it into your bunnies enclosure. The is a great way to keep your bunnies cool and the bigger the plastic bottle the longer it will stay frozen. They love laying against them because they are really cold. Ideal for a really hot day. By having a few bottles in the freezer so you can alternate them morning and night

Having a fan will probably be a good idea In hot weather, it will keep your bunny cool through the whole day. Having them pointing down onto your bunnies enclosure will make sure your rabbit will have the full effect. But make sure that the wires are fully out the way, maybe get some wire guards to assure your bunny doesn’t chew the wire.

Make sure they have full access to water ALL the time, you might want to offer more than usual during the sunny days to prevent dehydration. A bowl will make sure they can drink as much as they want , whereas a bottle might limit the amount of water they can have. But having them both on offer will keep your bunny hydrated. You might want to put ice cubes in there to keep it cool. And check they have enough regularly.

Never have your bunny in direct sunlight for long periods.


Never cool your rabbit down by putting them directly in cold water. Wipe a damp tissue on their ears to help cool them down.


Never leave your bunny unattended for a long period of time, and get them out of there enclosure because it might get to hot in there for them.
